Bangladesh Energy Prosperity 2050 Conference Begins in Dhaka
The second "Bangladesh Energy Prosperity 2050" conference commenced at the Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM) Foundation in Dhaka. Over the three-day event, a total of 12 sessions will be held, bringing together representatives from energy organizations, environmental groups, energy experts, lawyers, and professionals from various sectors.
In the opening session, climate scientists highlighted the alarming trend of recording the warmest weather each year for over a decade. The speakers also emphasized the need to bring fossil fuel-based power plants under a "no electricity, no pay" policy. Discussions further focused on expediting energy and power supply, establishing an independent public inquiry commission, and making preliminary environmental assessments (IEE) and environmental impact assessments (EIA) publicly accessible and mandatory.
The conference was inaugurated on Wednesday morning, December 11, by the Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Advisor, Md. Fawzul Kabir. In his inaugural speech, the energy advisor urged ensuring the quality of solar power components such as inverters and cables.
The advisor also shared plans to allocate government land to private companies advancing renewable energy initiatives. He stated, "We have many transmission lines in electricity. However, we are not economically prepared to move towards large-scale renewable energy. In the future, we (the government) will provide land for renewable energy production. There is unused government land, including railway properties, that we plan to utilize."
